An estimated 1 in 133 individuals in the United States is diagnosed with celiac disease. While the only proven method to alleviate symptoms is a strict gluten-free diet, there are several medications in development that may potentially help patients manage the condition more effectively.

Marc Schwartz, MD, a gastroenterologist with the UPMC Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, discusses new therapies currently being tested, and explains how some compelling recent data may show a link between the timing of gluten introduction for infants and the risk of developing celiac disease.
